There were quite a few upsets in the singles in the 40's. Gerda Preissing, the 2nd seed, fell in the quarters to an Italian player. But the winner ended up being an Austrian player. The Austrians cheer and yell and wave flags for their players, and are very supportive of their fellow Austrians.
The doubles final was a repeat of the 1999 final between Gerda Preissing of Germany, Beatrice Villaverde of Argentina and Kaye Nealon and Vicky Collins of Australia. The result was the same, even down to the score, 62 76. Preissing and Villaverde were the victors.
Kathy Vick was the lone American in the draw and fell in the first round to the 3rd seed who eventually won the event. She reached the final of the consolation and lost in 3 sets to Collins. Tracy Houk was entered but could not play due to the bombing which prevented her from flying to Austria in time.
