World Championships: Final American Results and All Winners & Runners-Up
55 Singles: The Americans in the draw were Dean Corley, Jerry Kirk, Mike Beautyman, Peter Bronson and Hugh Thomson. Thomson was the top seed, but fell to the eventual winner, the German, Hans Plotz in the quarters. Beautyman upset the 8th seed, Rauty Krog, RSA in 3 sets in the round of 32 before falling to his doubles partner, Peter Bronson, USA in the round of 16. Bronson then ousted the 2nd seed, Aussi Terry Smith in 3 sets before falling to finalist Keith Bland (GBR). Hans Plots, Germany, beat Bland for the world title; Peter Keller of Australia took the bronze over Bronson.
60 Singles: The Americans in the draw were Larry Dodge, Geoff Grant, Len Saputo and Harvey Pelton. Dodge, an alphabetical seed, reached the round of 16 where he fell to Grant in straight sets. Grant had already upset the 5th seed, Bodo Nitsche of Germany, and after beating Dodge, upset the 3rd seed Gabiano Palafox of Mexico to reach the semis. There his run stopped, as he lost to top-seeded Australian Bob Howes 62 in the third. Saputo, also an alphabetical seed, ran through the bottom half of the draw to reach the final. He and Howes waged a classic battle, finally decided by a third-set tiebreaker, which Saputo won. Murray French of Australia, unseeded, edged Grant 57 75 62 to win the bronze
65 Singles: The Americans in the draw were Amir Zavieh, Richard Leslie, King Van Nostrand (the top seed), Jim Nelson and Robert Duesler. Leslie upset the 8th seed first round, then fell in the round of 16 to Nelson, who lost in the quarters to Van Nostrand. Robert Duesler also reached the quarters where he lost to Peter Froehlich of Australia, the 2nd seed. Froehlich then beat Van Nostrand in 3 sets in the final. Max Byrne placed third.
70 Singles: The Americans in the draw were Nelson Case, Art Russo, Joseph Russell, Charels DeVoe and Russell Seymour. Russell reached the round of 16 and fell to eventual winner Lorn Main of Canada. Main also beat DeVoe in the semis 76 in the third, and then had to go to a third set tiebreaker to oust Seymour in the final. John Barry took third by default over DeVoe.
75 Singles. The Americans in the draw were Robert Jordan, Graydon Nichols, Bill Tully, Bob Meyerdierks, Tony Franco, Dick Sorlein and Rubin Jaffe. Tully drew the 2nd seed first round and fell in 3 sets. Franco reached the quarters and was edged 75 in the third by the third seed, Jirkovsky of Austria. Meyerdierks lost in the round of 16 to Meyerdierks. Nichols beat Jordan in the round of 16 and the 4th seed in the quarters, then lost to top-seeded Laci Legenstein in the semis. He beat Jirkovsky 61 60 to place third. Legenstein beat Peter Becroft in the final.
80 Singles: The Americans in the draw were: Bob Sherman, Nehemiah Atkinson and John Benn. All three reached the semis. Sherman beat Benn in the semis. Atkinson beat Sherman in the final to win the world championships. Britt Gary Ells edged Benn in 3 sets to place third.
85 Singles: The top 2 seeds, David Carey and Gardner Mulloy were the only Americans who played matches in the 85's. They reached the final and Mulloy won in 2 sets.
