World Championships: Final American Results and All Winners & Runners-Up
55 Singles: Judy Louie upset top-seeded & defending champion Ellie Krocke in the quarters 63 26 64. She then fell to Australian Carol Campling in the semis 76 16 62. Trish Faulkner, ousted Heide Orth. The two played a close 3-setter as they normally do. Faulkner beat Campling in the final to win the world championships and Louie took the bronze medal with a 3-set win over Orth.
60 Singles: Heather McKay of Australia beat Steel, USA, in the quarters 63 63; Margaret Wayte, also of Australia, upset 3rd-seeded Charleen Hillebrand, USA 75 26 63 in the same round. McKay won the world championships in this category over Wayte and Rosie Darmon of France won the bronze medal.
65 Singles: Nancy Reed, USA beat 4th-seeded Yolanda Ramirez in a 3rd-set tiebreaker to reach the quarters, then fell to Aussie Margaret Robinson 63 64 in that round. Top-seeded Dorothy Matthiessen, USA, beat Robinson 75 26 64 in the semis. Doris DeVries, USA, beat the 3rd seed, Jackie Zylstra, RSA, 76 62 in the quarters and the 8th seed, Jacquiline LeCaillon of France, 62 46 76 in the semis. LeCaillon took out the 2nd seed, Inge Weber in the quarters. The final was a tough 3-set battle between the two Californians. DeVries took the first set in a tiebreaker, Matthiessen won the 2nd, also in a tiebreaker, then won the third 63 to win the world championship. Lecaillon won the bronze medal.
70 Singles: Cynthia Smith upset top seeded Louise Owen, USA in the quarters 62 64; Rita Lauder, GBR beat Carol Jaffe, USA in the quarters ; Louise Russ, USA beat Carey (5) in the quarters and Lauder in 3 sets in the semis. Ruth Illingworth, Gr. Britain beat Russ in the final and Smith won the bronze medal.
75 Singles. There were only 3 Americans in this draw. (There is not yet a women's 75 cup team, so few Americans made the trip to Australia just for the one event.) Virginia Nichols won her first round match (her first ever match on grass) over Cloe Osorio from Brazil, then lost to the 3rd seed, Lown 61 61. Piachart Hussey had a tough loss first round. She split sets with eventual finalist Patricia Colyer, Australia, then lost the tiebreaker which was played in lieu of a third set in this age division. (There was no consolation offered in the 75's, so she went all the way to Australia to play 2 sets and a tiebreaker!) Elaine Mason, USA, avenged her doubles partner's loss, beating Lown 60 64. Mason beat Colyer 61 61 in the final to retain her world championship. Beth Lowan of Australia was third.
55 Doubles: Louie (USA)/Orth(Germany) and Faulkner/Hillebrand (USA) both reached the semis. Faulkner/Hillebrand fell (and Hillebrand literally fell!) to Campling/Frances Taylor (GBR) in the semis. Campling/Taylor beat Louie/Orth in the final. Faulkner/Hillebrand won the ¾ playoff to place third.
60 Doubles: Darmon (France)/Steel (USA) won the world championships over Gordon/Wayte, USA.
65 Doubles: Belmar Gunderson/Nancy Reed, USA and Burnette Herrick/Boots Van Nostrand, USA both lost tough first round matches. DeVries/Matthiessen reached the final but fell to ann Fotheringham/Roginson, Australia.
70 Doubles: Louise Owen/Louise Russ, USA reached the final but it was not played due to rain. Joyce Jones/Angie Ray, USA won the bronze medal
75 Doubles: Elaine Mason and Virginia Nichols upheld their top seed, beating Colyer/Lown in the final. .
