The Marble Cup: 60's

The members of the 60's team were Suella Steel, Suzanne Clark, Charleen Hillebrand and  Sinclair Bill.  The captain is Janet Atkisson
The Alice Marble Cup was played for at the Kensington Gardens Lawn Tennis Club in Adelaide, South Australia the week of April 21st. Nine teams were present divided into two round robins with the top team from each to advance to the final. The USA was drawn into the short RR with the defending champion Australia along with Great Britain and Canada. The other RR was comprised of South Africa, last year's runner-up, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Japan. Due to the inclement weather and threat of it we played three days straight defeating Canada and Great Britain each 3-0 as did Australia. Our match with the Aussies on the third day was extremely close in the singles which we split: Margaret Wayte def. Suella Steel 2-6,6-4,6-2, and Charleen Hillebrand def. Heather McKay 4-6, 6-3,6-1. However, the superior grass court knowledge and team of Jan Blackshaw and Margaret Wayte overwhelmed Suella and Charlene in the deciding match 6-1,6-2!
South Africa defeated France in another close match to gain the final against Australia. The Aussies won both singles matches and played a substitute team in the doubles which the SA team won. The USA defeated France for third place with a singles win by Suella and a doubles win by Charleen and Sinclair Bill.
