The 35/45/55 Indoor Championships, Homewood, IL

The 35/45/55 Indoors will be held the 15-19 of May, 2002. The 55's will be held at this site for the first time.    The site is the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet & Fitness Club in Homewood, Illinois.

And the winners were: 35 Singles: Christine Sheldon; 45 Singles, Tina Karwasky and 55 Singles, Brenda Carter.

Saturday Results:

35's: There were no upsets in the semis and Marcinkowska faces Sheldon in the singles final. Marcinkowska beat Patterson and Sheldon ousted Works. In doubles, Marcinkowska/Sheldon beat Hayden/Patterson 6-1; 6-2.

45's: Xanh Miller upset last year's finalist, Elizabeth Freeman-Young 64 61 to reach them singles final against the defending champion, the seemingly ageless Tina Karwasky. Karwasky ousted Cathleen Farrell.   Karwarsky/Lane won the doubles, beating Suszko/Whiting 6-4; 6-2. O'Sullivan/Yuritic took the bronze over  Bohac/Wheatley 6-2; 6-1 

55's: Judy Louie upset the 2nd seed, Mary Wilson, in 3 sets to reach the singles final. There she will face Brenda Carter who beat Barb Mueller in 2 close sets, 76 75.  The doubles title went to Louie/Mueller who beat Carter/Wilson in straight sets. Johnson/Thomas took the bronze over Gaddis/Barnhill.

35's: The top 4 seeds reached the semis. In the doubles there were some slight upsets, as the 3rd seeds beat the 2nd seeds and the 4th seeds beat the top seeds: SF (3) Marcinkowska/Sheldon d. (2) Lane/Yuritic 6-1; 0-6; 6-2 SF (4) Hayden/Patterson d. (1) Kitchen/Palmer 6-3; 7-6(2) 

45's: Cathy Farrell upset Frances O'Sullivan in straight sets in the quarters. O'Sullivan was the 3rd seed in singles.  In doubles, the top seeds, Karwasky/Lane and the 2nd seeds, Suszko/Whiting, reached the final, but both semis were close. Karwasky/Lane edged O'Sullivan/Yuritec 75 64 and Suxzko/Whiting beat Bohac/Wheatley 63 in the third.

50's: The top 4 seeds reached the semis. The only upset so far in this division was in the round of 16 where Suzi Swartman upset Bonnie Roberts. In doubles Barnhill/Gaddis joined the 3 seeded teams in the semis.



 

Tina Karwasky won the singles and doubles at Homewood for the 2nd straight year in the 45's.
