Dodo Cheney won her third 85 singles title of the year, beating her sole opponent, Lorena Albrecht 60 61 in the final. She also won the 80 doubles round robin with Betty Cookson.
Margaret Wickham of Cameron Park, CA won the 80 singles title, beating Cheney 61 63 in the final. It was her first gold ball. She also took the bronze in a 4-team round robin, with Donna Moore. Alice Jones/Ann Wyker took the silver ball in the 80 doubles.
Elaine Mason has been equally dominating in the 75's and won her 11th straight singles and doubles titles respectively in the 75's. She beat Irene Shepard in the semis 60 60 and Rita Price in the final 61 60. Price upset June Dickey in the semis in 3 sets. Dickey edged Shepard in the 3/4 playoff in 3 sets. Dickey/Mason beat Peggy Golden/Kay Wakley in the final 61 62. Midge Peer/Joan Perryman took the bronze.
In the 65's, Doris deVries battled for 3 hours and 45 minutes against Nancy Reed in the semis on a hot and humid day before prevailing 76 57 75. Reed had beaten deVries the week before and deVries said Reed played very intelligently at Germantown. Matthiessen in contrast, beat Carol Wood 60 60 in the other semi. The final was a different story. Matthiessen had to work hard to retain her singles title, but prevailed 75 75. deVries commented that the difference was the superior volleying of Matthiessen.
Lynn Little/Matthiessen won the doubles over Reed/Belmar Gunderson 61 61. deVries/Dorothy Wasser took the bronze over Lyn Tietz/Carol Wood.
