Dubler and Perry Cup Results:
Saturday Results: The USA lost 2-1 to France in the Dubler Cup final. Fernando Maynetto lost at #2 singles 61 75, having led 5-2 in the 2nd set. Sal Castillo then won a great 3-set match against Trevor Allan 6-3 in the third. Castillo/Warrick Jones played Allan and his partner and lost 63 64 in an exciting final match.
The USA Perry Cup team finished third, winning both singles points against Germany. Spain won the Perry Cup over Australia, with a 2-man team (and those men were limping but very happy!)
Friday Results: Dubler Cup: USA won today against Belgium. They won for the 3rd straight day 2-1, winning at #2 singles and then taking the doubles point.
Perry Cup: The USA fell 2-1 to Spain. Spain won at #2 singles in straight sets, Litwin of the USA played #2 singles. Larry Turville, USA won at #1 singles. Litwin/Turville fell in 2 close sets in the final match to the Spanish team, who according to Litwin have been out to get them since they got off the bus on Monday...
The Dubler Cup has 5 groups of 4 teams. The seeds are France, the defending champions; USA; Spain; Germany and Australia. The USA finished 2nd in 2001. They won their first round match on Monday 3-0 against Switzerland. They won Tuesday against South Africa 3-0. Their third RR match was against Netherlands. USA won at #2 singles, then Sal Castillo lost at #1 singles, but rebounded to take the doubles with Warrick Jones 4,5, coming back from a break down in the 2nd set to win the final 3 games. In the quarters Thursday they beat Brazil 2-1, again winning at #2 singles, dropping #1 singles, but this time, winning the doubles decisively 2,3. Brazil's players were Barbosa, Ufer, Coelho and Lobao.
The Perry Cup has 4 groups of 4 teams. The seeds are USA, the defending champions; Australia; Spain and Germany. The USA is in the group with South Africa, France and Turkey. They beat South Africa 3-0 the first day. Litwin played #2 singles and beat Botha 1,0; Turville played Hubert at #2 singles and won 3,1; Boukheir/Wofford won the doubles 3,1.
Men's 45's: The Dubler Cup: The team members are: Sal Castillo of San Antonio, Texas; Warrick Jones, Aurora, CO and Fernando Magneta. The captain is Bob Schmitz, Scotia, NY.
Men's 50's: The Fred Perry Cup: The team members are: Larry Turville, Dublin, OH; Len Wofford, Elie Boukheir, and Bob Litwin. The captain is Dick Scheer, NYC, NY.
The Perry Cup team beat South Africa, France and Turkey 3-0. They play Mexico next I think. They had a bye on Thursday.
