The Maria Bueno Cup

Saturday: USA lost 2-1 to Australia. Karen Gallagher lost to Kerry Ballard and Lil Peltz-Petow fell to Liz Allan at #1 singles. Gallagher/Peltz-Petow won the doubles point.  Germany beat France 2-1 to retain their Cup title. Gail Lovera won at #2 singles for France over Heide Orth. Heidi Eisterlehner then beat Nicole Hesse Cazaux at #1 singles, I believe 4,2. Orth/Eisterlehner won the deciding doubles point 64 61 over Nicole and Gail.

Friday: USA fell 2-1 to France. Peltz-Petow of the USA lost 3,5 to Gail Lovera. Faulkner of USA led 5-3 in the 2nd against a tough player ("the forehand"), Nicole Hesse, but fell 63 75 also, in a very well-played match. The French team defaulted the doubles. The USA plays Australia for 3rd place. Germany beat Australia and plays France for the Bueno Cup.

Thursday: USA beat Gr. Britain 3-0. Gallagher played #2 singles, Peltz-Petow played #1` singles and the same 2 players played doubles, Faulkner did not play. All matches were won in 2 sets. USA plays France next.

Wednesday: The Bueno Cup USA team finished play (which began at 10:30am) at 7:30PM!. Lil Peltz-petow won at #2 singles against Ellie Krocke 76 (6) in the third and cramped up badly after the match. Trish Faulkner lost to Elly Appel at #1 singles in straight sets. So it was down to the doubles. Faulkner played with Karen Gallagher (Peltz-Petow felt unable to play) and they won 76(5)5-7 7-5 despite losing Faulkner's serve 3 times in the final set (serving into the wind). Gallagher finished the match with a topspin lob near the line. Both Americans played great under stressful and windy conditions.

Results, Tuesday April 23: USA beat Ireland 3-0. Karen Gallagher started the team off with a win at #2 singles. Lil Peltz-Petow then won at #1 singles and Peltz-Petow/Trish Faulkner finished the match with a 60 60 win in the doubles. The Bueno Cup team has a tough match Wednesday against the Netherlands (Elly Appel and Ellie Krocke).

The Bueno Cup has 4 groups of teams. The seeds are Germany, the defending champions, USA, France and Australia. The USA had a tough round robin group, since the Netherlands, a very tough team, will be one of their opponents in that group. The USA finished 2nd in 2001.

The team members are the top 3 ranked players in the USA 50's division: Trish Faulkner of Florida; Lilian Peltz-Petow of Florida and Karen Gallagher of Colorado. Faulkner is also the tournament director of this event. Margie Cooper of West Palm Beach, Florida is the captain, but due to an injury, her temporary replacement will be Kerry Young of Orlando.
