The Suzanne Lenglen Cup: Finalists

Saturday 4-27-02: USA lost for the second time 2-1 to the Netherlands. Chris Sheldon dominated the Netherlands #1 player in singles, 2,1, but the USA lost the deciding doubles point, played by York/Sheldon in straight sets. It was a fine performance by the unseeded American team. 

Friday: 4-26-02: USA upset the top seeds and defending champions 2-0 (Germany opted not to play the doubles). Hyacinth Yorke and Christine Sheldon won at #2 and #1 singles respectively. Jami Patterson, the 3rd member of the team is injured. The USA will play Netherlands in the final. They lost to Netherlands in round-robin play several days ago 2-1. The USA was unseeded in this event.

Thursday 4-25-02: The Lenglen Cup team lost to Netherlands, the 3rd seeds, 2-1 in their round robin on Wednesday. Chris Sheldon won at #1 singles, but the USA lost at #2 singles and the doubles. Jami Patterson, playing #2 singles and doubles on the USA team hurt herself in that match. Today, Thursday, USA played Spain, the 4th seeds, in the quarters, and won 3-0. Chris Sheldon won, and Hyacinth Yorke won and Chris and Hy won the doubles  in 3 sets. They play the top seeds, Germany, in the semis tomorrow, and Patterson probably will not play. 

Tuesday April 23, 2002: The seeds for the Lenglen Cup are: Germany (the defending champions), France, Netherlands and Spain. The USA was unseeded and ended up in the group with the Netherlands. The USA Lenglen Cup team has played one match, against Great Britain. They won 2-1, winning both singles and dropping the doubles point. They play the Netherlands on Wednesday. There are 4 groups of teams and the top 2 finishers in each group will go into a quarterfinal draw to determine the Cup winner. All the teams which finish 2nd in their round robin group will play a team which finished first in its group in the quarterfinals.

Women's 35's: The Suzanne Lenglen Cup. The team members are: Christine Sheldon Mott of Illinois; Hyacinth Yorke of Pennsylvania and Jami Patterson of Indiana. Mott is the top ranked player in the USA in the women's 35 division, and Yorke is number 2. Patterson is new to the 35's and was highly ranked in singles and doubles in the women's 30 division in 2002. The captain is Nancy Reed of Florida. The site is the Naples Bath and Tennis Club.

The following teams will be playing in Florida: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Gr. Britain, Mexico, Netherlands, Slovenia, So. Africa; Spain, Turkey and USA.
