YOUNG CUP CONTINUED

Young Cup Day 3:  Day 3 was and off day for the Americans and Germans.  Argentina beat Mexico without losing many games and advanced to the final 4.  The exciting match of the day was between Austria and Australia on Center Court.  Austria was 2-0 going into the tie and had only to win it to advance to the final 4.  Australia started off well, with their #2, Vicki Collins beating Austria's Roswitha Woltsche 3,3 in a strategically well-planned match.  Then Kaye Nealon of Australia took on Austria's Patricia Ladenberger.  They split the first two sets, then the Austrian #1 won the third set racing to a 3-0 lead and hanging on to finish out the match.  So it all came down to the doubles.  If Austria won the match they were on to the semis.  If Australia won in straight sets, they were on to the final...so of course it went the distance, with Australia prevailing 64 in the third. Therefore Austria, Australia and Gr. Britain all were tied at 2-1.  After counting sets won, it was a 2-way race between Austria and Australia.  After counting games, Australia prevailed.  Other teams winning today were Gr. Britain over Sweden 30, Canada over Switzerland 30 and France 21 over So. Africa. (The French #3 player was playing #2 singles and injured her calf 2 games into the match and had to retire).

Friday:  The semifinal matchups were: USA vs. Australia and Germany vs. Argentina.  The teams which came in 2nd in their respective groups play off for 5th and the matchups were: Austria vs. France and Canada vs. Mexico

USA beat Australia 30.  Tina beat Vicki Collins, a lefty who hits lots of spins 5,3.  Diane solidly beat Kaye Nealon, a scrappy player who gets lots of balls back.  The rallies were terrific, but Diane won most of them in her 2,0 win.  Mary Mottola/Carolyn Nichols beat Nealon/Collins 76 73 in the final match.

Argentina beat Germany 21.  Gerda Preissing started things off well at #2 singles, winning 3,1 over Cora Mallea de Salimei.  But Beatriz Villaverde from Argentina beat Jutta Falbusch from Germany 3,3 at #1 singles.  Then the Argentinians combined well in the doubles beating Preissing/Falbusch 2,5 to reach the final.

The final day dawned dull and dreary and rainy.  All play had to be taken indoors at a "Tennis Halle".  The surface was a carpet with sand on top of it, quite slippery.  Karwasky won the first match 3,4 over Gloria Moreno Quintana.  Fishburne played a brilliant match  in defeating Villaverde.  Villaverde has a beautiful, fluid game, and a deadly dropshot off both wings, but Diane moves superbly and played the right shot so consistently.  Fishburne rallied from 03 down in the first set, overcoming her fear of falling, to win it 64 (on a 3-3 point), and won the 2nd set 63, and the tie for USA.  Karwasky/Mottola beat Villaverde/Mllea de Salimei in the doubles 6,3.  For the USA it was their 8th Young Cup win.

Germany beat Australia 20 (no doubles played).  Preissing beat Collins 75 61 and Falbusch and Nealon played for nearly 3 hours before the German #1 prevailed in the third set.

France beat Canada 30; The number 2 singles was won 5,2 by France.  Suire gave Canada's #1 a lesson, winning 2,0.  The French won the doubles, only a pro set was played due to time constraints on the indoor courts.

The final order of teams:

USA, Argentina, Germany, Australia, France, Canada, Austria, Mexico, Gr. Britain, Switzerland, So Africa, Sweden and Spain.
