Thursday: The match of the day was Ellen Goodman, who has a penchant for 4 hour matches, and Jovette Levine. By the end of the match, 4 hours after it began, both players were cramping, but Levine hung tough and retrieved lots of dropshots, winning 75 in the third.
In the 65's, Mary Ann Plante and her partner upset the top seeds, Dori deVries/Belmar Gunderson in 3 sets, rallying from 0-3 in the third to win, refusing to miss at the end. Joan Nevins upset Nancy Reed, dropping the first set, but then leading 51 in the 2nd when Reed retired.
In the 45's, Frances O'Sullivan pushed 5th-seeded Trisha Judge to 3 sets before Judge prevailed. The other seeds advanced in straight sets.
Sunday: 35's: Renata Marcinkowska won the 35 singles for the 2nd straight year at the Checket Cup. She beat Robin Keener in straight sets in the semis, though the 2nd set was hard fought. In the final she avenged her only USA loss of 2003 by beating Christine Sheldon, also in straight sets. She used a great variety of spins, dropshots, deep topspins and heavy slices to break up Sheldon's rhythm. Sheldon beat Marianna Hollman in the semis. Hollman and Keener then played the longest match of the 35's tournament, nearly 4 hours. Keener finally prevailed in the third, winning match point with a super drop shot.
In the 35 doubles, the top seeds reached the final, Keener/Sheldon (an awfully tough pick-up team) and Mary Dailey/Marcinkowska. Dailey/Marcinkowska jumped to a 5-3 lead in the first set, only to see it evaporate under the pressure of Keener's great returns and Sheldon's excellent finishing shots. Keener/Sheldon won 75 63. Hollman/Joni Hannah rebounded from losing to Dailey/Marcinkowska by edging Trisha Judge/Holly Sellars in 3 sets to place third. Hannah/Hollman were down a set and 3-0 before rallying for the win.
45's: There were many good matches in this division, but the longest was between Carolyn Nichols and Mary Ginnard (for the 2nd year in a row). Under muggy conditions, the doubles partners played for nearly 4 hours before Nichols prevailed when Ginnard narrowly missed a drop shot at 5-4 in the third. Ginnard had prevailed in the quarters in a mild upset over Sherri Bronson, 76 64, beating her for the first time. In the same round Judge gave Diane Fishburne her only test of the week, but still lost 63 63. Fishburne took out Karen Hausman in the semis for the 2nd straight tournament and cruised past Nichols in the final 61 62.
In the doubles, Ginnard/Nichols again were involved in the longest match of the event, a night match against Sheila Ernest/Janet Mosely. Ernest and Mosely played great and won 26 64 64. Rita Anderson/Fishburne beat the top seeds and winners at the January Grandes Dames event, Bronson/Kathy Foulk 63 63 and played flawlessly in the final, taking out Ernest/Mosely 62 61.
55's: In the round of 16, the match of the day involved Ellen Goodman, who has a penchant for 4 hour matches, and Jovette Levine. By the end of the match, 4 hours after it began, both players were cramping, but Levine hung tough and retrieved lots of dropshots, winning 75 in the third. In the semis, Clay rallied from a 3-5 0-40 hole in the first set (Betty Wachob serving) to win 75 62. Carter beat Judy Louie 63 64. Carter beat Clay 62 76 in the final to win her first Grandes Dames title. It was their first ever meeting.
In the doubles, the match of the tournament was the 3-setter between the pick-up team of Carter/Bunny Smith and the top-seeds and top-ranked 55's team of Louie/Kathy Doss. Carter/Smith had 5 match points and a 5-2 lead in the third set, but Doss/Louie fought them off and prevailed, and spurred on by that win, won the tournament, beating Clay/Goodman in the semis and Edmunds/partner in 3 sets in the final. Clay/Goodman finished 3rd.
In the 65's, Boots Van Nostrand had a great tournament, beating the top seed and defending champion, Dori deVries 76(5) in the third set in the semis. Lynn Tietz beat Carol Wood for the first time, in the quarters. She then fell to Julia Denny in the semis. Denny, a finalist in 2003, was one match better this year, beating Van Nostrand in 3 sets.
In the doubles, there were upsets as well. Nancy Reed/? Edged Judy Powell/Carol Wood in 3 sets in the quarters before being edged 76 75 by Wasser/Weiss in the semis. Mary Ann Plante was delighted with the win over deVries/Gunderson in the quarters. They then fell to Langer/Tietz In the semis. Langer/Tietz beat Wasser/Weiss to win the tournament.
The 75's was all Louise Russ for the third time this year. Russ beat defending champion Betty Eisenstein on a windy final day. It was her 3rd Category II singles win this year. Louise Owen/Russ also won the doubles adding the Checket Cup to the BallenIsles title they already held. They beat Stout/? In the final.
Dodo won the 85's singles and doubles titles again, combining with Jean Selvig to win the doubles over Burr/Scoggins?
