International Teams: Men's Preview
Every year there is an international team competition for veteran players, men and women, for players age 35-70 (women) and 35-80 (men). (Beginning in 2002, there will be a 75's Cup for the women.) In 2001, the younger age divisions (35-50, Group A) will play in Austria September 10-15. The older age divisions (55-80, Group B) were played in Australia in the spring, from April 23-29. The USTA sent 4 men's teams to Austria in 2001. Each team consisted of 4 players and 1 captain. These teams represented the USA in the following competitions: the Italia Cup (35's); the Tony Trabert Cup (40's); the Dubler Cup (45's) and the Fred Perry Cup (50's).
All of the Cups took place in Austria. The Italia Cup was held in Portschach; the Trabert Cup in St. Kanzian, Austria (in conjunction with the Lenglen Cup); the Dubler Cup in Vienna and the Perry Cup in Velden (in conjunction with the Young Cup).
The members of the 2001 Italia Cup team (35's) were: Jeff Greenwald, San Francisco, CA; Brett Dickinson, La Jolla, CA; Richard Schmidt, Orlando, FL and Dexter MacBride, Gaithersburg, MD. Bill Kellogg, La Jolla, was the team's captain. The team finished 2nd to France in the team competition.
The members of the 2001 Tony Trabert Cup team (40's) were: Pablo Arraya, Key Biscayne, FL; Val Wilder, Euless, TX; Mike Fedderly, Palm Desert, CA and Egan Adams, Bradenton, FL. The captain wa Jim Russell, Belton, SC. The team finished second overall.
The members of the 2001 Dubler Cup team (45's) were: Sal Castillo, San Antonio, TX; Claude England, Timonium, MD; Warrick Jones, Aurora, CO and Wendell Pierce, Oakland, CA. The captain was Bob Schmitz from Scotia, NY. The team finished 2nd overall in the Dubler Cup competition.
The members of the 2001 Fred Perry Cup team (50's) were: Larry Turville, Dublin, OH; Jamie Pressly, West Palm Beach, FL; Brian Cheney, Chandler, AZ; and Armistead Neely, Atlanta, GA; The captain was Richard Scheer, New York City, NY. The team won the Perry Cup competition.
The Vets World Championships followed the Cup events. They were held in Velden Austria. Information can be found at http://www.carolynnichols.com/Velden2001 and the draws are posted at http://www.92computing.com.
