Day 1: Sept 10: Austria upset USA 2-1. Roswitha ? Lost to Tina Karwasky, USA, 60 57 63; Maria Geier, Austria, beat Carolyn Nichols, USA 62 46 63 (3 hr 15 min); Roswitha/Maria beat Tina/Frances O'Sullivan 64 76(5). South Africa beat Spain 3-0; Netherlands d. Australia 3-0 (and won the #1 singles match 76 in the third, 17-15 in the breaker); Switzerland d. Canada 2-1 or vice-versa.
Day 2: Austria upset Germany 2-1, winning both singles; USA d. So Africa 3-0: Tina d. Pumela ? 61 75; Nichols d. Terrey Schweitzer 62 26 64 (another 3 hr 15 min match) and O'Sullivan/Chriss Wing d. Pumela/Nicky ? 62 76.
Day 3: USA is off.
Weather: brrrrr is the operative word, it is cold here, in the 40's and 50's and rainy, but it's so beautiful it makes up for a lot.
Day 4: USA beat Spain 3-0, and all matches were finished relatively quickly. This was the only day without rain all week.
Day 4:USA d. Germany 2-1. Karwasky won her match easily. Nichols played a marathon against her German opponent. The first part of the match was played outside, under increasingly awful conditions (wet, windy and very cold). Nichols trailed 67 20 when the rain became to heavy to continue. Play resumed on an indoor carpeted surface. Nichols won the 2nd set 60, but one break determined the outcome of the 3rd set, won 64 by Germany. Christy Wing and Karwasky put a quick end to Germany's hopes of scoring an upset, winning the doubles 60 62.
Day 6: USA d. Gr. Britain 3-0. Karwasky, Nichols and Wing/O'Sullivan all scored straight-set wins. USA finished 3rd. Austria beat Netherlands 2-1 (winning the doubles in the third set) to win the Court Cup.
